Very clean looking Bob and great pics. This thread has turned out to be very useful as it is a common issue for a of people adding their own downriggers.

Did you use any backing plate on the underside or just straight bolts through the gunnel? Just curious and thinking that would help the rigidity of the mount depending on the gunnel thickness. It's probably just overkill though.

    Hi Tech
I did use a backing plate, 3/16" steel. The track is 12" the backing plate is 5" wide by 18" long. With out the plate I think the gunnel would flex too much, especially if the boom is extended a foot or two.

I also thought security. I drilled & tapped a 1/4 x 20 hole in the middle of Berts fixed base. Drilled a mating clearance hole in the track. When I put the fixed base in the track, I install a security bolt in the 1/4x20 hole, this prevents a thief from sliding the base out of the track.

I am getting ready to install my Cannon Mag. 10 HS soooo I would also like to see some picts.
I am going to use my Scotty Manual as a back up, I mounted it by making up a mount system using the Rod Holder so that I can move it around to anyone of the 4 Rod Holders that were mounted on the boat when I bought it.It works great & is easy to move around. ....Kokonuts

P>S> I just realized that I missed all the picts on the first page! My Bad!

    Jason,

We forgot to try the 6" pedestals to see if they will put those at a better heighth. I will get one to you to try it an see what you think.

Yes, Pettys riggers are all mounted up! He and I spent about three hours on it today. We got all the wireing pulled, connecters on, crimped and shrink tubed, VHF radio hooked up and working, Lowrance LCX-27 hooked up and ready to go. A little clean up and a good vaccum job and she will be ready for the water

All right.....Looks good. Did you put anything under the SS plates for flexing??

I had to make a couple of brackets for mine as the Berts Track footprint was too small, & the Gunnel really flexed a lot.

    Thanks for the pics

I was going to ask the same question, about putting anything under the SS plate. I 'm thinking with the length of your boom you may get some serious loading with the DR weight and getting a good hit from a nice fish. This something I'm working on with my mounts.

Having my first boat being a fiberglass runabout, the plywood under the glass is like adding backing to an aluminum boat. Unless you hang a ball at 10 mph, you'll be fine.

I went over to Petty's today to check out those new mounts he has on his boat . I was a little concerned about the length of the boom and overloading the top plate of the mount. But after talking with him and watching what little flex there is there , I like his set up. Good Job Jason.
