Ok so with everyone getting fish in the boat I thought it was about time to start me 2011 Kokanee fishing season. I was supposed to fish Crescent Lake with my Dad & Robbie, but Robbie called and cancelled because he was sick. So we made a last minute change of plans and decided to fish Green Peter instead. I was cold wet and slow, but I had great company and we scratched out ten nice koks lost 5 and put 15 rainbows back in the lake.

Pink R&K Micro hoochie worked well in the morning.
FWG pink bug in the afternoon.
Kokanee are running in 10 feet of water, and run your gear WAY BEHIND YOUR BOAT....

Thanks dad for a great day of fishing.

Nice looking fish. What was the average size?

The fish are around 11 to 12 inches and are running about the same size as last year. Meat is starting to turn red but most are on the skinny size. We got one that was starting to put some weight on. We need a week of warm weather to turn the bite on, and maybe move them down the water column. I should have brought my long lining gear I think it would have added another ten to the count. Most fish caught on my top rods that I had in ten feet of water... After mid day I didn't have a bite on the bottom rods, they ran 20 to 15 feet. I did see a few jumpers first thing in the morning. I gave some R & K tackle to a family at the boat ramp, I told them they could fish with it today or hang on to it until July, and then resell it at the boat dock for about $100. I hope they hooked into some kok's. I told them that the kokanee fishing was going to be slow, so if they were ok with rainbows just put some power bait on the hooks, and you shouldn't have any problems limiting out. Personally I like to help families out by putting the rainbows back in the lake, all the rainbows we picked up had just been planted no holdovers.

Robbie you owe me one I think you will have a whole family of dedicated customers!!

I was up at Green Peter yesterday also. We where fishing mostly across the lake from the island and to the island and back. Picked up 8 Kokanee and a couple rainbows. We didn't start too early, around 9, and caught them all between 11 and 2. Four where around 11 inch range, but four where 13 3/4. I wanted to say 14 but that would be streaching them a little. They where in pretty nice shape. Tried several things, but had the best success on a silver Apex at around 15 feet. I have a few pics on my phone, but just not sure how to get on here.

Here are the four larger fish I caught on Sat. I filited the one after watching the video that kokaneekid posted on fileting kokanee. It was a big help to me. I need a little more practice, but it wasn't as hard as I thought it might be.

Nice looking fillets... By July you'll be a pro if you keep fishing Green Peter.. Good Job on the fishing I wasn't sure how anyone else was going to do... We put in around 8:30 and there was a lot of boats there I was suprised.

I was surprised too by the number of boats on the lake. A week ago friday was different . We where first out and wondered if we where nuts with snow at thistle creek. It turned out to be a nice day though.

I fished it last Thursday. Marked lots of fish moving into the shallows down by the dam. Lots of drive by's and a few in the boat. Opened the stomachs on the fish we landed and there was nothing in there. The fish were just coming out of semi dormancy.
Moved higher up in the system and tried again and the bite was on. Opened the stomachs on the first fish and they were full of plankton. Never seen this before, but this year seems to be an exception all the way around. Springers are late and the weather has been unseasonably cold and water temps have been real low.
The moral is to start fishing the shallows up the lake a bit where the bug hatch is going on strong. Made all of the difference for us. Fish are looking good, averaged 12inches or better. R&K hoochies pink super micro hoochies were the hot setup with gold dodgers. We were long lining 100' behind the boat. Double D dodgers on the outside and Vances in the middle. Corn au natural was the ticket.

Piece of cake once you get a little practice. After you fillet a few, you won't do it any other way.
I don't even gut them myself, I just fillet them leaving the gut inside the rib cage. Makes short work of cleaning and more time for enjoying the result. The kokanee kid has put myself and a few others to shame by boning out his fillets. This year I will be following suit.

So I am guessing that the water level is OK for the docks since no one mentioned an issue??
