My son-in-law and I arrived at the Gull Point boat ramp at 6 am only to find it closed for construction work. It seems the water level is being lowered to extend the ramp deeper into the reservoir. The flows out of Crane are much lower than previous years. We then headed to the North Wickiup boat ramp which and launched. The small dock is now high and dry.

The surface water temp was 67 F and water clarity is still pretty good for this time of year. We made one pass from the boat ramp up to Gull Point with nary a hit so we moved towards the Davis arm. We picked up a couple of fish on R&K hoochies behind sling blades. I switched to spinners that had been working the past several weeks. They got bit a on a regular basis but 80% did not stick. There was either a small tap or a complete pound down and the fish was gone by the time I got to the rod. Usually the front corn was missing. After a couple of hours it got ridiculous the number of strikes that did not stick. I stuck with spinners while my son-in-law tried various hoochies. An R&K UV blue spatter back with hot pink tails spinner hoochie started producing bites, but few fish landed. A few fish we landed were 9.5 inches long. I have not caught a Kokanee that small since fishing Odell last year.

I figured some of the bites we were getting were these smaller fish so we moved just inside the Davis arm. I am not very familiar with the channel orientation there, which was too bad. As soon as I dropped down a orange/chartreuse R&K hoochie behind a Seps 000 dodger it got hammered. Just as it came unbuttoned my top rod went off…I missed both fish. We had moved out of the channel and it took a little bit to find it again. As soon as we got back into the channel I had another hit. The bite slowed after the third pass and the fish we marked at first were gone. My son-in-law finished the day with a fish after switching over to an orange splatter back Shasta Pee Wee hoochie behind a 000 dodger. We had to be off the water by noon so we had to call it quits.

We ended up with 10 fish; the bigger fish were 16-17 inches, the medium sized fish were 13-14 and bleeder dinks were 9.5. Two of medium sized fish had tiny skeins so I figure they might next year’s fish. The meat quality of the bigger fish is still in pretty good shape but should decline quickly now. It was a fun day with lots of action just not a lot of fish.

It looks like the President of the board will be requiring future meeting at regular intervals to manage the supply chain. Great report.
