View Full Version : Painting Chrome?

Painting chrome blades creates a nice look but getting the paint to stick is tough. What ideas do you guys have to etch the chrome without using a primer?

Very interseted also! Iam about to start to repaint a bunch of old spinners, been wondering if there was anything I had to do to the metal before I primed. Thanks for asking about this!!

One of the old ways is to rough up the surface with fine sandpaper so the paint will adhere to. But you lose the chrome effect. Would vinegar or muractic acid make a good etcher? A thought.

Vinegar wasn't much help. I'm considering a 50/50 muratic acid / water solution for my next experiment.

If you don't mind seeing the shine of the chrome through the paint this stuff will work without haveing to prep the surface...

A couple of questions if you would please. Can you brush it on and what happens when you apply UV to the paint coat?

Don, have you seen the aerosal propellant air brushes? The brush screws to a can of propellant. the cans are pretty cheap compared to compressors. I'm thinking of trying it for something like that lacquer.

I haven't seen them. Any links to a supply on the net?

I do have compressors. Maybe I should look into buying an airbrush setup?

Once you get an airbrush, you'll never know how you got along without it!

I wonder if this is the same as using UV tape?

Hows your success with this method on your dodgers SilverBullets??

I've only dipped lures/blades in it... never tried any top coat afterwards.

Dave harbor freight has some preety cheap air brush and pancake compressors even a hobbyist air etcherand you can find 20% off coupons in a lot of magazines including AAA via magazine
you can also use a bottle of co2 with a regulator a lot of artists use that

I'm doing some test with roughing up the surface just enough to keep the paint on. Also working on different seal coats. Epoxy and Enamel vs. Lacquer.

Don, Keep in mind that you can put enamel over lacquer but not the opposite.

I'm having terrible results with the enamel. It isn't hard enough to handle the wear. I'm getting lots of marks in it.

I have used the appliance epoxy paint for a few side projects thats handled the weather really well. I don't know if it comes in an abundance of colors. I also don't know if its any different than regular epoxy paint.

Has anyone tried a baking technique after painting to help cure & harden the paints? A small toaster oven should do the trick. Also, some paints come with accelerators to quicken cure times as well as hardening. Time to make a trip to a specialty paint store. If you run into a goofy individual there, you probably got the right place. A real paint sniffer. laugh hyst

You didn't hear about my dodgers at 250° while we were there? Mickey thought I'd lost my mind! I sprayed them in the afternoon and knew they wouldn't get a full 24 hours before water time so in the oven they went.

Just a side note, these blanks I got at Jannsnetcraft are SS. The paint is holding up great! The blue and purple one on the left was a destroyer at the gorge this past trip.

Well liquor is quicker or so they say!

Dave painted those dodgers with a rattle can. He does get some nice results.

Dave, I find it interesting that the paint hangs on to stainless but not nickle?

Stainless is bare metal. The nickel is plated so I think the problem is the chrome. Too bad I can't find some bare nickel blades and blanks.

I tried the lacquer today for my seal coat over the UV coat and having a good result. I think all 5 of the samples are going to pass inspection.

So you used enamel paint without a base coat, shot or dipped? the UV and then put a clear coat of lacquer without causing an orange peel?

Very cool!

This batch was lacquer based paint, UV and then clear lacquer seal coat. This looks like it might be the secret to avoiding the orange peel, which btw might be something to try on purpose. The orange peel effect under the UV light looks like areal winner to me, just not as pleasing to the naked eye.

On a smooth painted surface, UV coat under the light looks like a glow or a fluorescent. With an orange peel finish, the wrinkles have a different intensity and offer a wild contrast. Imagine the texture and finish to an orange crush piece of tape.

I just shot a prepainted blade from one of the parts mfg's. Mine literally has purple dots on the UV blue background after applying a topcoat. I'm not sure the prepainted blades need a top coat however???

SuperD

I was assuming the top coat was to protect the UV coat. I know the UV coat dulls the factory coat so the top coat just gives it some gloss back.

I've been using vinyl paint to paint my blades. the finish comes out way better when airbrushed. it can be brushed on BUT, it will be inconsistent finish. Vinyl paint is very thick so you have to thin it out a bit. Unless you have a Gravity Feed airbrush, it will shoot vinyl paint like water.

I've been told if you take a scotch brite, scratchy pad with comet, comet has bleach in it as well, the paint will stick to chrome spinner blades.

Dave,

I think i'm on to something here. This was a Chrome plated Dodger. it had some sort of clear coat finish on it. Soaked it in Denatured Alcohol and wiped off the coating. heated the blade with a heat gun at low temp for 30 seconds or so, Shot it with createx colors and top cated it with Dupont clearcoat. I have mebbe a couple ounces of Dupont clearcoat left that i got from a buddy of mine that paints at Shanahan's Auto Body.

Has anyone used 'Adhereto' or 'Bolldog'? They are both adhesion promoters that I use prior to painting over chrome, nickle, brass, or gold finishes.

Bulldog is available at most quality automotive paint suppliers in clear. The ADHERETO is also available in basic colors as well as clear and can be found on line at House of Kolor.
I've never used ADHERETO but the Bulldog product runs about $25 out the door in a 15 oz rattle can.

I seen the Bulldog at a PPG Store yesterday. I picked up some PPG Clearcoat. I gotta figure out the proper mixture and shoot it out of a my Iwata with a .5mm needle. Thanks you for the info RJ.

I taped and shot some Bulldog on these 2 blades, gold plated and nickle, so you could see the clarity. The coat on the nickle blade is too heavy and you can see the cloudiness, but on the gold blade it is right.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh252/eddallen/Equip%20-%20Lures/bldog.gif

The cloudiness will not matter unless I choose to shoot it with a Kandy or other transparent. I've come to the conclusion that all this is for me and not the fish.
