Thought I'd share a few pictures from the 8,000 foot level here in Oregon of lakes formed from past volcanic eruptions (Crater, Paulina and East lake.)
These pictures are from Crater Lake with a couple shots of some rock pinnacles. These spires are "fossil fumaroles" where volcanic gas rose up through hot ash deposits, cementing the ash into solid rock. Some of these spires are up to 100' tall.

These pictures are from Paulina Peak and look down on Paulina and East Lake. The lakes were formed by the collapse of Mount Newberry 10,000 years ago. There are pumice fields, cinder cones and the largest obsidian flow in North America. On a clear day from this peak you can look up into Washington and see Mt. Adams then turn around to check out Mt Shasta down in California. The waterfall is Paulina Falls.

Beautiful country! I love it down there. I will be in Sunriver in a couple of weeks with the family, and will be checking out some of those sights for myself. Thanks for the pics!

Nice pics Silver Bullets. Thanks for sharing. There are some fantastic sites all over our country. Alot of my favorites are in the western states. The Pacific coast line has a beauty all of its own.

One of the hot springs. It snowed/sleet the first 3 days, so I sat in the hot springs with my waders to warm up.

Silver Bullets, I read that you were at Paulina the same time I was.
I was camped for 10 days at the site right in front of the boat ramp.At some point we were probably 10' from each other.

I am biased and think the mountains here in Western North Carolina are the some most beautiful places in the world, but wow! The scenery in your neck of the woods is incredible and you have great kokanee and trout fishing! Some day I've got to make the trip west.thumbsup

trollmonkey, show us what you have. I know of beauty that lies in the eastern US. I have lived in some places and traveled to others. But unfortunately haven't seen it all.

SB, I will be heading your way again middle to late August, I will PM you before I go and maybe we can meet up.
I thought I might be able to recognize your boat, but I didn't realize that half the people in Oregon have a Smokercraft! There were short ones, medium, long ones, center consoles, forward consoles, tillers etc. and that was just the Alaskans.
