Yet another report from Lake Berryessa which has been fickle this year with higher quality than quantity most of the time. A bit of persistence usually pays off eventually. Jenna decided she would come along for a holiday excursion to brave the heat (which didn't pan out as forecast) and the lake lice holiday crowds (which were light and kept at bay due to the wind). We also had it on direct rumor from Capt Al (Dreamcatcher) that the fish appeared to be active so we couldn't pass up on an opportunity for some Summer Hog Hunting.... the theme of the video.

We were not disappointed with our day trip adventure as the Kokanee kept us busy for a wonderful day of fishing. It was not a wide open bite but there was plenty of fish on the prowl and they chose their moments to get on the bite and offer us some great action. The fish were caught from 45-70 feet and were biting a variety of things like Radical Glo Tubes, Hoochies and Spinners. I rotated a lot of gear to keep busy and justify my expenditures. :-) We enjoyed the 17+ inch fish and the others that kept us busy too. The best for the day was caught by my daughter and was 18.5 inches, our best this year.

Highlights of the trip was the Kokanee that came up from 70 feet to dance several times before getting off and then moments later another one that clustered up several lines and I thought was snagged in a 3rd line but it was still on but I lost him hand-lining to the boat. We captured some of the big fish on video underwater which made it even more fun and are part of the video story. Here's the YouTube link and pictures for the day...

Jenna managed the best fish of the day at 18.5 inches (a female which explains the length) and she had some good size caviar in her as well...

TKs guys...

You should have seen the photos of Jenna trying to hold up both limit sticks... that was a bit much.... I need to make a small PVC stand to hold one side of a stick.

Throw us a report on your Berryessa adventures every once in a while JT... of course unless you are waiting for that 23 incher... nananana

We'll see you at the Melones Saturday I'm sure for another round of fun with those crazy Kokes!

Thanks for sharing the pictures and the video. My kids were watching it with me. This weekend, I will be making a limit stick with their names on it as well. They thought that was way "cool"

Thanks as always for putting the effort in.

awesomereportAnother outstanding report by Kevin and Jenna!101goodpost101 Your underwater videos are really amazing...great job!!! Got a question...did you bend those dodgers to give them additional movement and what speed were you trolling?

I definitely bend the dodgers... the advantage of using the sling blade style. I like to run the gear beside the boat to eyeball that it won't roll (too much bend) or not enough for my liking (bend it some more) before I send it down. Once you get a fish on teh same setup a few times take a look at that action in the water and leader length and see if you can correlate anything in terms of the bite. Also they have a higher speed threshold when you are in windy conditions or just want to run a bit faster on the troll. I use the Vance's and Sep's too as my previous underwater video had examples of each but usually in more controlled conditions since you can't bend them.

For the most part I am trolling between 1.3 to 1.5. That day it was windy at times so I was above and below those speeds a good deal trying to make up for chop and wind gusts. In the underwater video if you see the dodger going up and down it's due to chop at the surface and with the short setback this can be pretty dramatic.
