I fished the big Kokanee Power Shasta Classic Team Trout / Salmon derby last weekend with my good friend TopFuelKokanee and we had a blast. The lake is was about 6 feet from full and something we have not seen in years so that made it a new lake with lots more ground to cover. We did some pre-fishing on Friday and found the fish seemed pretty scattered so we covered a lot of ground. The Salmon (ones that were biting) were generally in the 35 to 100 foot range and the trout were in that top 20 feet as would be expected as the water temp was generally 55 feet at the surface. There were 200+ people in the derby and roughly 90 teams entered with lots of familiar faces.

Setups that produced for us in the Salmon dept were mainly hoochies and a limited amount of bait. For the trout the lures we got most of our fish on were spoons and humdingers.

We covered a lot of ground from the Dam, Dry Creek, The BackBones and the I-5 bridge. It was just a matter of being in the right spot at the right time.

The dilemma from a derby view was whether to go for the bigger Kings that were easily in the 2+ lb class or good 2lb trout which seemed to be few and far between except those that were on the Pitt arm on Saturday. We decided to concentrate on Salmon if they were going to bite and then switch to trout when the salmon bite was done. In the end we managed to place 19th overall in this competitive field for a small payout and got lucky enough to collect the Big Salmon check on Saturday with a 3.54 King. As usual we were up to our video hijinx and just having a good time at one of our favorite lakes. Here's some pics and a couple of amateur YouTube videos we put together.

Here's the videos... two parts since we shot too much for just one...we think we have a new sponsor.... or maybe not!

And here's the Big Salmon for Saturday fish at 3.54 lbs, 21 3/4 inches.... what a fight... it actually wrapped itself around another downrigger cable that we had to untangle before we could bring it in.

And this bonus 20 inch King caught speed trolling for trout....this one sealed up our Sunday weight to put us in the standings.....

Tks guys... the weather was very nice for the most part and opposite of the stormy rainfest from last year. The overall fish catching was off from previous years for us and others. With all the extra water and cooler temps it seems the lake is behind a bit and it was a matter of some luck and being in the right place at the right time when the fish decided to bite for a while. We do spend a good deal of time entertaining ourselves which makes it fun and not overly serious.... especially when we get enough fish to weigh in. I'm already looking forward to the fall derby and maybe squeezing in a trip in-between at Shasta.

I envy you guys. Nice kokes. Its going to be a while before I can get my first koke catch in crymeariver. I wait all winter just so things start thawing out some for koke season and the 'honey do' list all of sudden grew. 101duh101

Sorry my bad. I do need to come back out for some kings. The screen I was on is smaller and made the kings look like kokes at a glance. Did some checking on my backup computer for updates, it's getting to old. Got onto the bigger HD and what a difference.
