Just curious if anyone here fishes for steelies? made the first fall trip of the year up to riggins and landed one small keeper. not bad for only 1 1/2 hours fish time. just wanted to get out of town for the morning. heading back wed. then for the weekend. ill post reports when i get back. if anyone else steelhead fishes, lets post some pics and reports!!

You might have better luck on BigFishTackle.com but never-the-less, all fishin is good! I've wanted to give it another try since it's been so long (~30 years) and so far away from rivers that don't dump into the Great Salt Lake. Not much lives in that inland sea. The winter runs seemed to always be better with more and bigger fish but I've forgotten all the timing. Now that I have more money and more time might entice me to make the drive back to the Great Northwest? Any ideas on getting accurate and honest reports from locals before I put together a trip? Or should I just hire a guide as I have no boat for this kind of fishing?

i rarely fish out of a boat. if you are looking at doing some steelhead fishing here in idaho, NOW is the time. this run of fish is supposed to be one of the best on record. just about all sections of the salmon right now are averaging 3 hours per fish caught. that is amazingly good. i talked to the fish counter today when checking my fish and she said about 3/4 of the people are coming by with fish. you can get a guide, but there are plenty of places on the river that you can fish on your own successfully. pm me if you'd like a little more info on places to fish or tackle..

I've never fished for Steelhead , but it looks like a blast. When things settle down I may have to get up to Idaho to try that out.

Fishing in Hell's Canyon is very good. The Salmon is slower, and the Clearwater is even slower than that. We fished the Clearwater and Salmon a couple weeks ago. Got 6 on the Clearwater, but it took all day and was tough fishing. I fish that river ALOT, and know it very well. It was tough. The salmon we fished one day and got nothing, one on, that broke the line. My buddys that fhish Hell's Canyon have been wacking and stacking. One group got 50 fish one day. Lot's of 20+ fish days for groups of 2 or 3.

Way to go! Nice metalhead! I've heard the Great Lakes have all been cleaned up from the pollution since I lived there. There's a success story in itself. Looks like they eat well too!

That fish is too pretty. Here is an ugly late season Idaho B-run:

Karry Batson with another late season Clearwater River B-run:

gotta love the 2 salt fish!! salmon river fish are fun, but once you hook a b-runner it changes everything. the extra drive doesnt seem so bad once you know what youre in for. had a buddy's friend with us last year who landed a 20lb. keeper at button beach. biggest steelie ive personally seen!! cant wait to start making trips around febthumbsup

Nice dinks Ron. Real men run their open sleds below Saddlebags and pound monster steelies then suffer the repurcussions by drinking penalty shots of schnapps. Later, they revel in their glory by enjoying a great meal with friends... :)

That sounds vaguely familiar. thumbsup

BTW, got 23 more steelies to the boat this week.
