Fished the Shasta Lake Fall Trout Derby back in mid October and had a blast as usual fishing the 2-Day Derby. I'm finally catching up on processing some video so now here's the delayed report. It's like a Shasta reunion with a lot of familiar faces and boats up there which makes for some great camaraderie and there were about 170 anglers for the event. Fished with my old friend Russ again from Oregon for our Shasta reunion of sorts and we did a bit of pre-fishing on Friday to check out the lake conditions and this turned out to be an interesting one as the lake had received some mega rain (4 to 10 inches) from the previous storm and that did stain all the river arms and places where creeks were flowing in. The trout were biting and didn't seem to mind so it was a fun filled time as usual. A few "Golden Trout" tried to run interference on our efforts as you will see on the video.

The trout were in the 1 to 2 lb range so all you needed to do is catch consistent fish near or over two pounds to place in the derby. The fish didn't seem all that picky for us and bit all kinds of lures from spoons (RMT, Shasta Tackle, Excel, Needlefish), Rapalas, Spinners and other hardware we tossed out for fun. When the bite was on it was really on and then it would die for a while but we couldn't complain. All fish were on the surface to 10 feet mainly with a few down deeper once in a while. By Sunday the lake had pretty much cleared in visibility but the bite was not as good but we still caught some quality fish and my weight was slightly better so it managed to sneak in for 20th place for a very tight weigh-in separated by tenths of an ounce. If you had just over 7 lbs for the weekend you were in the money. Top weight was 9.64 lbs for a 4 fish 2 day total.

Enough talking and on with the pictures and video.

Once again, thanks for the GREAT VIDEO! Most of the boats in Utah have been put away for the winter but NOT MINE! tooexcited I'll be trying some of the closer lakes until the hardwater (ice) makes navigation or the ramps impossible.
