Verticle D.R. Flashers

In one of the latest issues of the STS magazine I saw an add for a verticle DR flasher and being a little nuts I thought Id make one up and give it a shot!

That sounds interesting.How do you attach to the cable, with a wire snap or a release? Our trout lakes and one koke lake in North carolina have pretty sparse populations so I am always looking for an edge, this might help.

I use heavy swivels with snaps to attach to the DR and the ball. The line I used for the flasher is Berkley wire leader 45lb. test. Its easy to work with and Ive used it to make regular lake flashers.

I have also made up a longer verision with 4 flashers and a special swivel for the realease. By using the swivels I can change flashers in a hurry. I have made up severial different colors, sizes and shapes. There are no limits to what you can add!

When you talk of a magazine STS, I'm not sure I have heard of it before. Tell me alittle more about it please.
The pictures you showed to us, sounds like a good concept. I wonder what they would do with UV tape or paint. You did a nice job putting your blades and beads together.

Kokonuts do you attach the upper snap to the rigger cable directly or use a release to hold it up the cable? I assume the lower clip hooks to the ball eye.Thanks for the pics,nice job!

On my DR I just use the regular clip and swivel to attach the Verticle set up. I dont really need the upper swivel in the picture.

There is a couple of options to attach the release clip.
1. a couple of feet above using a clip to avoid tangles
2. attach to any of the flasher blades. I leave a loop in the wire at the rear of each one.
3.On the ball if you dont hang a regular horizontal flasher there.

So far I've found that I cant add to many blades, 3- 5 work best because of the blow back on the DR line.

I think that with 3 verticle flashers and a short horizontal set of 3 or 4 on the ball would be the best display. I would then use a clip about 3 ft. above and run the dodger/lure 6- 10 ft. behind it. I have only had this set up out on 2 seperate times so I still dont know what will work best.

I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this before.

My concern would be the fact that fish don't tend to be aggresive towards a lead fish but rather the smaller, follower. A vertical presentation doesn't lend to that profile. It is why traditional flashers go from large to small.

Are your blades attached with clevises so their able to rotate?

Super D.....I am still in the "TEST" phase of this and welcome all the comments ! I am still running the same Ball Troll but just a little shorter because of the extra drag from the verticle set up. Its now a Vert./Horiz. set up!

Bullets, I have made up several flashers of different sizes,colors and shapes all on wire with a clevis and beads just like you would use on a regular Lake Troll. The only difference is I have to limit them to 2 or 3 blades because of drag and blow back . The swivel snap is connected to the main vert. line & allows a fast change!

Kokonuts...I know your still in the testing stage. I was just curious if your tests so far have shown if vertical flashers cause more blow back than a horizontal set-up useing the same number/size blades?

Bullets......Thats what Ive been seeing with the 7lb pancakes and 8lb ball that I have now. Thats also why I am keeping the total # of blades down
and trying different styles. 10 lb Pancakes will be in the works this winter if I see that this is going to work.

I'd think that the multiple stacked blades would confuse them. I think the follow the leader theory would work better.

OK, I just returned from a week of "Testing the Vertical Flasher" at Lake Merwin!

I dont know who is more confused, the Kokanee or me!
We fished early in the morning, late afternoon, early evening and it was by far the best early in the morning! Nothing new there! Terry & I had good times, slow times and REAL SLOW times! I used spinners, hoochies, and a couple of "NEW Things". Corn seemed best, with Pink Maggots 2nd.

The bottom line is , when they were hitting it was GREAT!
As far as my Vert. Flasher goes all I can tell is that it LOOKS real impressive in the water! And I need 10lb weights but that will have to wait until next year.

The "Highlite" was a DOUBLE - DOUBLE! Thats two Fish in the same net! I had hooked one and then Terry had one on
and I was almost ready to bring mine over the rail when Terry grabbed the net & then my fish and then his!! WOW!
We laughed a lot over that one!
